Few places capture the essence of living well quite like the North Shore. That spirit comes to life in this issue of Aspire on the Shore, where we highlight the community and opportunities that make the area such a coveted destination. Nowhere is this more evident than the state of the local real estate market, which underscores the high demand for luxury properties throughout the area. Beyond the home, this issue embraces the joy of the journey. Whether it’s a scenic ride aboard a glamorous train in Europe, a summer road trip in the perfectly equipped luxury car, or the adventure of supporting a budding young entrepreneur, we celebrate the experiences that enrich our lives. We also highlight the strength of community – from multigenerational businesses that have stood the test of time, to individuals who have turned their passions into thriving nonprofits. Their stories are a reminder that success isn’t just about where you’re going, but who you bring along for the ride. At @properties Christie’s International Real Estate, we understand that living well often starts at home but extends to so much more. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we’re incredibly grateful for our clients who have allowed us to be part of their journey on the North Shore and beyond. If you’re planning your next move or simply looking to make the most of where you are, we’re always here to help.

T he real estate scene on the North Shore is as vibrant as the communities it encompasses. From Winnetka and Wilmette to Lake Forest and Deerfield, the region continues to thrive, even as shifting dynamics in interest rates and buying trends shape the market landscape. One thing is clear—buyers and sellers alike are making bold moves. NORTH SHORE STATE of the MARKET By Jo Ann Theriault-Fazio Divisional Sales Director OriginPoint, A Rate Company Coming off a rock-solid 2024, the North Shore real estate market is poised for another strong performance in 2025, led by luxury sales and gently easing supply.
PRICES and TRANSACTIONS RISE Luxury properties have been the centerpiece of this transformation. From 2023 to 2024, the North Shore experienced a robust 14.8% increase in luxury home transactions valued at $1 million or more, according to data from BrokerMetrics. Even more impressive, the total dollar volume of these sales surged by a remarkable 17%, reaching over $2 billion. This underscores the strong demand for upscale properties across communities like Highland Park, Evanston, Winnetka and Glencoe, where buyers seek both prestige and lifestyle. And it’s not just the high-end market seeing gains; the average price for overall detached properties on the North Shore jumped 13.4% last year compared to the year earlier, reflecting the region’s enduring appeal to buyers at every price point.
CASH REIGNS Interestingly, based on an analysis of @properties Christie’s International Real Estate transactions, 45% of home purchases on the North Shore last year were all-cash sales. While cash often eliminates appraisal challenges and streamlines closings, it can also be a savvy maneuver in the current mortgage climate. With interest rates hovering near 7%, cash buyers have taken the reins. However, if rates soften in the months ahead, cash buyers will have an excellent opportunity to refinance, enabling them to replenish brokerage accounts or repay family members who loaned funds for their property purchase.

OriginPoint, a Rate company, is @properties Christie’s International Real Estate’s mortgage-lending partner. The company’s loan officers work hand in hand with @properties Christie’s International Real Estate agents to offer borrowers a customized mortgage financing experience defined by superlative service. For more information, ask your @properties Christie’s International Real Estate agent or visit originpoint.com. Whether you’re a buyer, seller, or simply watching the market, the North Shore’s blend of opportunity and style ensures that 2025 will be another exciting year to stay engaged in real estate. JUMBO OPPORTUNITY For purchases as well as refinances, OriginPoint offers proprietary jumbo mortgage products that are tailor-made for North Shore real estate. Through its parent company, Rate, OriginPoint has access to a deep pool of jumbo loans thanks to a securitization program that was set up beginning in 2020 when many banks exited the jumbo lending space. The program not only delivers below-average interest rates but also offers more flexibility in terms of debt-to-income ratio, reserve requirements and other inputs. TIGHT SUPPLY PERSISTS Meanwhile, the market itself continues to show resilience. 2025 total sales volume is set to rise, reflecting the premium prices being paid for homes in these coveted neighborhoods. Inventory remains tight, with an average supply of just 3 months in 2024, keeping the market competitive. “Low inventory has been the story on the North Shore since 2021,” noted Don Shea, Vice President of Brokerage Services at @properties Christies International Real Estate. “Frankly, that makes it a great time to be a seller if you have a place to move to. It’s still early in the year, but we are seeing deals come together, and I expect to see a lot more activity and properties coming to the market,” added Shea. With such strong momentum, it’s no surprise that homes are selling quickly. On average, properties across the North Shore spend just 25 days on the market, and even luxury listings aren’t lagging far behind at 34 days. These quick turnarounds speak to the desirability of the North Shore, where proximity to Chicago and the lakefront, and vibrant community living make it a perennial favorite for homebuyers.

KEEPING IT in the Family
North Shore family businesses have cracked the code to multigenerational success
WORDS BY KELLY MAGUIRE
12 // ASPIRE ON THE SHORE
Lawson and Larry Thalmann, current president of Chalet , representing the 3rd and 4th generations of the family business with a truck paying homage to the generations before them
F rom Succession to Yellowstone , popular TV shows paint a dramatic picture of modern-day family businesses. While these portrayals are often highly exaggerated, the reality is that running a family company comes with unique challenges – especially when multiple generations are involved. In fact, statistics show that only 12% of these businesses make it to the third generation, and even fewer survive into the fourth. Yet on the North Shore, a handful of them have defied the odds, surviving (and thriving) across several decades. So, what’s their secret? We spoke with some of them to uncover the common threads behind their longevity. BUILDING on a LEGACY A strong legacy is the foundation of any family business, but long-term success depends on how each generation upholds and evolves it. For Lake Bluff-based Terlato Wine Group, that legacy began in 1938 with a small retail store in Chicago. “The first generation laid the groundwork, establishing quality and building a reputation,” says President and CEO Bill Terlato. “The second generation, led by my father, expanded those relationships with some of the finest wine estates around the world.” Since joining the business in the early ‘80s and stepping into a leadership role in 1994, Terlato has continued the family legacy while innovating and significantly expanding their portfolio. Today, Terlato Wine Group is recognized in nearly every aspect of the industry, from retail to distribution, importing, marketing, winery ownership and vineyard development. Terlato’s children are also involved.
Similarly, Loomcraft Textiles owes much of its success to being a trusted name that’s synonymous with quality. “Reputation is everything,” says Andy Frankel, President of both Loomcraft, the retail business, and Dorell Fabrics, which has wholesale operations nationwide. The business got its start when Frankel’s great grandfather began buying closeout fabric around the country and selling it. Frankel’s father expanded into retail, and today Loomcraft is a go-to destination for North Shore residents in need of fabric, upholstery and drapery/ window treatments. Over the past eight years, the fourth generation has continued to grow the business, keeping their focus on quality control.

BALANCING TRADITION with INNOVATION
While a legacy is the heart of a successful family business, the ability to adapt is essential to remain relevant and competitive. Take Chalet in Wilmette, for example. The company’s roots trace back to 1917, when L.J. Thalmann started mowing his neighbor’s lawn at 17 years old. Over the decades, Chalet evolved from a yard care business to a full-scale landscaping and lifestyle destination.
ASPIRE ON THE SHORE // 13
Now in its third and fourth generation, Chalet is currently run by Larry Thalmann III, who has played an instrumental role in modernizing the business with the help of his children, Lawson and Carleigh. As Chief Technology Officer, Lawson opened Chalet’s e-commerce store, making it easier to shop for plants, home décor, and gardening essentials. The company has also embraced community engagement and sustainability, with Carleigh leading hundreds of events and their team recently launching a sustainability committee to align with today’s environmentally conscious consumers.
Razny Jewelers: Stan and Ingrid Razny with their children, Michael, Christine, and Eric
“If you’re going to have a successful next operation, you have to prepare that generation … they move into the leadership role as we move into the guidance role.” — STAN RAZNY, RAZNY JEWELERS
FOSTERING COLLABORATION
Working with family not only requires shared goals, but a willingness to embrace new perspectives. Whether it’s a new business line or a digital marketing trend to reach a different audience, “you have to be open to new ideas,” says Stan Razny, President of Razny Jewelers, Chicago’s top family-owned and operated jeweler for nearly 75 years. The company was founded in 1951 by Razny’s parents, who immigrated from Poland and opened the first Razny Jewelers location in Oak Park. Today Stan and his wife Ingrid run the business alongside their children, Eric, Christine and Michael, operating four locations in Highland Park, Chicago, Addison and Hinsdale. When it comes to longevity, Stan Razny emphasizes the importance of mentorship. “If you’re going to have a successful next operation, you have to prepare that generation…they move into the leadership role as we move into the guidance role.” “[Stan and Ingrid] have a lot of experience, and sometimes we have new ideas,” adds Christine Razny- Porter, who created one of Razny’s own jewelry brands, Refined by Razny. “It’s about working together to blend all those opinions to get the best final outcome.”
Terlato Wine Group President and CEO Bill Terlato and his son, Tony Terlato
PLAYING to your STRENGTHS
At the end of the day, success isn’t about competition – it’s about knowing your role and working together. “People always ask who will be taking over the family business, but I don’t think of it that way,” says Carleigh Thalmann. “Everyone can add value and stay in their lane. It doesn’t need to be a competition to the top.” Terlato echoes that sentiment. “We’ve cultivated a culture of open communication and mutual respect for each other’s strengths. There’s an understanding that everyone brings something different to the mix and people’s roles need to be aligned with their strengths and capabilities.”

Luxury trains are enjoying a renaissance as travelers embrace the romance of slow, scenic journeys and immersive experiences
WORDS BY KELLYMAGUIRE
ASPIRE ON THE SHORE // 21
A DOSE of NOSTALGIA and OLD-WORLD GLAMOUR
Among the most sought-after experiences is the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. With routes from Paris to Venice and other quintessential European destinations, this legendary train transports passengers back to the golden age of travel with its meticulously restored 1920s carriages, rich Art Deco details and impeccable service. Guests indulge in gourmet multi-course meals, sip cocktails in the iconic Bar Car, and cap off their evening with a decadent midnight brunch. “Historical trains can be an invitation to step back in time [to an era] when men wore tuxedos to dinner and women wore gowns. You feel like you’re playing a part in a movie,” says Thornton. New to the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is L’Observatoire, an extraordinary sleeper carriage designed by French artist JR. Featuring incredible craftsmanship, 24-hour butler service, a secret tearoom and a striking oculus for stargazing, the suite is priced at over $100,000 per night, making it the most expensive train cabin ever.
I f the fictional Jay Gatsby were alive today, you wouldn’t find him on a private jet – he would be sipping champagne in a lavishly appointed train carriage, gliding through the countryside. You could say that the Roaring Twenties are back, at least in the world of travel, as luxury train experiences continue to grow in popularity. “Many travelers want to slow down and savor the journey instead of rushing from one destination to the next,” says Jennifer Bitting, Manager at Lake Shore Travel in Glencoe. Beyond the desire to take the scenic route, there’s a growing appetite for unique and new experiences. “Americans don’t get to enjoy train rides regularly like people in other parts of the world, so there is a curiosity about it,” adds Kendra Thornton, President & CEO of Royal Travel in Winnetka.
22 // ASPIRE ON THE SHORE “Many travelers want to slow down and savor the journey instead of rushing from one destination to the next.” — JENNIFER BITTING, LAKE SHORE TRAVEL
THE LEADER in LUXURY TRAIN TRAVEL
ITALY in MOTION Another highly anticipated newcomer to Europe’s luxury rail scene is La Dolce Vita Orient Express. Set to launch this spring, this train channels the glamour of 1960s Italy with sophisticated carriages and decor inspired by the masters of 20th-century Italian design. Guests can choose from one or two-night journeys through Italy’s most breathtaking landscapes, from the rolling hills of Tuscany to the shores of Sicily. Each itinerary is carefully curated to showcase beautiful views along with exclusive cultural, historical, and gastronomic experiences.
The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is one of seven luxury trains operated by Belmond, a global hospitality brand known for its hotels, trains, river cruises and safaris. “Belmond is certainly the leader in luxury train travel. Nobody builds and operates trains like they do,” says Monica Varri, President and Owner of Lake Forest Travel Bureau. The brand is known for pairing travel with unique experiences. One such trip is a four-day ride aboard the Royal Scotsman, which includes a tour of the Scottish Highlands in partnership with The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, a leading global whisky club. Highlights include a private tour of the Benromach distillery, a visit to the Rothiemurchus Estate in the Cairngorms National Park, and a one-year membership in the Society. In July, another exciting journey awaits in the United Kingdom when Belmond debuts the Britannic Explorer, the first-ever sleeper train in England and Wales. Departing from London, this luxurious train invites travelers to explore the UK’s beautiful countryside and historic cities. Onboard, passengers can unwind in the wellness spa, mingle in the Observation car, and enjoy a world-class meal prepared by Michelin-starred chef Simon Rogan. Guests also have their choice of off-board guided excursions, ranging from boat tours and wild swimming to a countryside experience at a traditional British pub.
ELEGANCE meets EXCLUSIVITY A sense of exclusivity adds to the allure of luxury train travel. With trains like the Britannic Explorer and Royal Scotsman accommodating just 36 guests, availability is limited – and that’s reflected in the price. Trips generally start at around $5,000 per person for shorter itineraries but can exceed $50,000 for the most coveted accommodations. Given the growing demand, planning ahead is essential. “We generally advise planning 6-12 months ahead, especially for iconic routes with limited departures,” says Bitting. Thornton agrees, noting that some of the best cabins sell out more than a year in advance. For those dreaming of an era where travel was as much about the journey as the destination, luxury trains offer an unforgettable experience.

FOR THE PERFECT SUMMER ESCAPE, YOU NEED the right GETAWAY CAR Five luxury cars for your summer road trip
WORDS BY MILES JOHNSON
28 // ASPIRE ON THE SHORE
F rom National Lampoon’s Vacation to Little Miss Sunshine and To Wong Foo , road trip films have long enchanted American moviegoers. And it’s no mystery why. The road trip symbolizes freedom and adventure - the ability to go where you want, when you want, always finding something new and exciting along the way. So, with warm weather finally on the horizon, we’ve lined up five summer road trips and the perfect luxury cars to take them in. Because you deserve a getaway that’s nothing short of cinematic. GETAWAY to GALENA in a BMW X7 Nestled in northwest Illinois, near the Mississippi River, Galena is the perfect place to spend a long weekend. Eighty-five percent of the town is a national historic district, giving you the feeling that you’ve stepped back in time. If you manage to tear yourself away from the red- brick quaintness of it all, you’ll find some very un-Illinois- like rolling hill country that’s just as charming to drive. For that ride, we recommend the BMW X7. Three rows of seats and a seven-person capacity mean even larger families can cruise comfortably. And with a merino leather interior and Integral Active Steering, comfort is something this luxury SUV does impeccably. But it’s still a BMW, and that’s great news for whoever’s in the driver’s seat. Hanley Dawson IV, President of the Patrick Dealer Group in Schaumburg, says there’s a reason they call it the Ultimate Driving Machine. “It’s the best driving- engineered car that I personally see. It’s so fun to drive, it may even take your mind off the kids for a bit.”
ST. PAUL on a SINGLE CHARGE in a MERCEDES EQS
We’ve all heard the electric vehicle skepticism: the car will run out of charge, it’ll drive like a golf cart, etc. While that may be true for lesser EVs, the Mercedes EQS is built to go the distance. This luxury sedan boasts an EPA-estimated electric range of up to 390 miles, which means you can drive from Lake Forest, Illinois, to St. Paul, Minnesota, without ever having to plug in. But the EQS boasts more than just a long battery life. As Michael Rosengarden, President of Autohaus Automotive, Inc. in Northbrook, explains, it’s a Mercedes through and through. “This is the S class of EVs. It’s an unbelievably beautiful car to drive, with everything you’d expect from a luxury Mercedes Benz. You’re getting that quality and clean energy. You don’t sacrifice one for the other.” As for Minnesota’s capital, it’s worth the trip. From St. Paul’s magnificent domed cathedral to its perfectly strollable Summit Avenue historic district, there’s plenty to recharge you before the drive home.
ASPIRE ON THE SHORE // 29
ESCAPE to GREEN LAKE in a CADILLAC ESCALADE
It’s hard to find a more postcard-perfect summer spot than Green Lake, Wisconsin. With 27 miles of shoreline and a depth of 236 feet, the lake itself is a haven for fishing, boating and water sports. For the three-hour drive from Chicago, the Cadillac Escalade is the ultimate choice. With 8,100 pounds of towing capacity and seating for eight, it’s built for lake trips. As Dawson of the Patrick Dealer Group puts it, “This is the biggest family car you’re going to get.”
CAMPING the SLEEPING BEAR DUNES in a LAND ROVER DEFENDER Camping is a pretty modest ask of the Land Rover Defender 110. The most powerful Defender ever, the 110 can wade into three feet of water, has an off-roading brake system, and can raise and lower its air suspension to perform on challenging roads. For a camping trip, this beast of an off roader deserves a location just as muscular. The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore at the northwest tip of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula is home to the largest freshwater sand dunes in the world. You’ll feel like you’re on Tatooine as you trek up and down these mountains of sand, some as high as 450 feet.
The Defender has plenty of room to haul your gear, along with a smoother ride and infinitely more creature comforts than the 1980s-style model that achieved legendary status traversing dense jungles and African deserts. Our trim recommendation is the four-door Defender 110 X Dynamic SE with 395 horsepower.
MOTORING the MISSISSIPPI in a PORSCHE 911 Nothing says summer like cruising top down on a scenic drive. The Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway is a 33-mile stretch where the Mississippi, Illinois and Missouri rivers converge. With soaring limestone bluffs on one side and rolling waters on the other, this route is what convertibles were made for. And when it comes to sporty drop-tops, there is none more iconic or sexier than the Porsche 911. Sasha Fedorov of Porsche Lincolnwood, a division of Loeber Motors, puts it plainly, “There’s nothing like a 911. When you’re taking curvy roads it’s seamless, it’s smooth, and it’s got that invigorating feeling that I’ve never been able to find in another car.” Sporty, rugged, eco-friendly or cush…whatever your vision for the ideal road trip, your choice of a luxury four-wheel companion has never been better. So, gear up and get ready for a great summer adventure.

the year of FEEL-GOOD DESIGN 2025 DESIGN TRENDS Homeowners are seeking spaces where comfort meets style
WORDS BY WENDY GALE
34 // ASPIRE ON THE SHORE
2025 is all about creating spaces that feel as good as they look. In pursuit of this worthy endeavor, homeowners are leaning into clean lines and simple aesthetics: warm, soft colors, interesting and sometimes unexpected fabric and wall-covering textures, and patterns that evoke a sense of nostalgia. We spoke with interior designer Leah Bolger, founder of the award-winning Leah Bolger Design studio, to discuss current color and fabric trends that are both influencing interiors and making our homes ever more comfortable and livable.
Benjamin Moore Simply White, Oxford White, Glacier White
FEELING POSITIVE about NEUTRALS
In addition, the designer loves Simply White, Oxford White, and Glacier White, also Benjamin Moore staples. While cool and warm grays remain a go-to, Bolger warns to “always test grays in your own space before committing.” And she suggests viewing all paint colors in natural and artificial light, as the impact of light on color rendition can be dramatic. A great foundation for any room, neutrals allow homeowners to bring in bold pops of color through art, pillows, and design objects that can be swapped out seasonally, or when you’re ready for quick change.
Life can be complicated, so a neutral color palette can offer a welcome sense of calm and comfort. “Color has a huge psychological impact,” says Bolger, who also taught interior architecture at the distinguished Harrington College of Design for 15 years. “I always tell my clients, ‘Let’s go with what you love.’” But sticking with neutrals doesn’t mean staying monochromatic. Bolger recommends layering shades of taupe, cream, and soft grays. Some of her favorite neutral paint picks include Benjamin Moore’s Classic Gray, a soft gray that Bolger claims “goes with anything.”
Benjamin Moore Classic Gray
Benjamin Moore Wrought Iron
DOORS are for PAINTING Rich, deep tones are gaining in popularity, particularly when used on trim and doors. Bolger loves Benjamin Moore’s Wrought Iron, a deep charcoal-gray, describing it as “the little black dress” of paint colors. A unique, sophisticated option is to match your trim to the wall color but in a different sheen, such as matte walls with satin trim. In general, darker
colors can work well for home libraries, dining rooms, powder rooms or areas where a dark and dramatic aesthetic is desired—but your doors or trim can handle a deep navy, gray or soft black in other rooms if there are elements of lighter tones as well.
ASPIRE ON THE SHORE // 35
EASY DOES IT: PERFORMANCE FABRICS Performance fabrics have gone fully mainstream and are often a top choice, offering easy maintenance without compromising on style. “Durable stain-resistant textiles aren’t just for homes with small kids and pets,” says Bolger. “Indoor-outdoor fabrics are now making their way inside because they’re so versatile and practical.” Brands like Holly Hunt and William Morris (pioneering and historic patterns) are offered in performance fabrics stylish enough for the living room while standing up to daily wear and tear.
ALL ABOUT TEXTURE Texture is an essential design element, adding dimension and interest to any space. “When you start with a neutral color palette, texture can bring the room to life,” Bolger states. Pillows, throws, and rugs are classic ways to bring texture into a room, not to mention architectural details, like molding or wall paneling such as beadboard and wainscotting. In addition, natural materials, like stone and wood, are more popular than ever. Marble in particular is making a comeback. “We’re seeing marble used in unexpected ways, like on range hoods and accent walls,” Bolger notes. Overall, the more tactile the textures in your design choices, the better. Homeowners want finishes that invite touch and engagement.
VINTAGE and RETRO FABRICS Nostalgia can often shape a homeowner’s design choices, as people find comfort in styles from the past. Vintage and retro-inspired fabrics, with patterns reminiscent of past decades, are becoming more popular. Whether it’s Bolger notes. These fabrics look refined and offer a superior feel and durability. While they may not provide the same maintenance-free experience as a performance fabric, natural textiles bring an understated luxury to spaces like formal living rooms and even bedrooms. AU NATUREL We all want to do our part to promote sustainability, even when it comes to fabrics, and these days homeowners are enjoying natural textiles as much as synthetic alternatives. “Cotton velvets and wool blends are popular options,”
a mid-century modern textile or an Art Deco motif, these patterns add character and flair. When paired with heirloom furniture or accessories that hold
WONDER WALLS Wall coverings have been increasing in popularity over the past few years, and the trend continues in 2025. “People are rediscovering wallpaper as a way to add depth to a space,” Bolger shares. Colors, materials, and textures abound, so there are options for every style and vision, including grass cloth, even velvet and fringe. But the trend doesn’t stop at walls: “Don’t forget about the ‘fifth wall,’” says Bolger. Ceilings are yet another canvas to bring flair to a room, adding unexpected charm with floral prints and textured finishes overhead.

RAS AL KHAIMAH The Lowdown on the Emerging Emirate
WORDS BY NICOLACHILTON
ASPIRE ON THE SHORE // 43
D ubai, long the darling of the United Arab Emirates for its resorts, superlative shopping, and glamorous restaurants, may need to keep an eye on the upstart that’s snapping at its heels. While the UAE’s northernmost emirate of Ras Al Khaimah may not be as famous as its neighbor, great opportunities exist here. RAK, as it’s commonly known, has had a reputation for being sleepy – a weekend destination for UAE residents looking for a slower pace of life and less elevated accommodation. But it’s waking from its slumber and has ambitious plans. Big brand luxury hoteliers are rushing to make their mark on RAK’s coastline. The emirate is already home to luxury resorts by Ritz-Carlton, Waldorf Astoria, and InterContinental, and a new Anantara brings Maldives-style overwater villas to the neighborhood. According to Raki Phillips, CEO of the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA), more than 20 new hotel projects are in the pipeline, bringing an additional 7,183 keys to the emirate by 2027. But goals in Ras Al Khaimah go much further than opening hotels, and Phillips notes that development doesn’t come at the cost of the natural environment. It’s about expanding responsibly, he says. “As the licensing authority for all new hotel developments, RAKTDA is also able to set guidelines and protocols to regulate sustainability standards and work closely with hotels to ensure sustainable practices.”
International hotel brands setting up shop in Ras Al Khaimah have seen a sharp increase in tourism. — JACKIE JOHNS, MANAGING PARTNER CHRISTIE’S INTERNATIONAL REAL ESTATE DUBAI The emirate is also poised for growth beyond tourism. While increased leisure options, restaurants, and retail resulting from the new hotels will likely have a positive impact on residents’ quality of life, the additional development of infrastructure, along with improved health and transport facilities, make the emirate a serious contender for those looking for a long-term home. RAK is also positioning itself as an attractive option for entrepreneurs. The emirate’s strategic location for local and global trade, plus its facility to allow 100% foreign ownership of companies, low corporate tax, and low operating costs, make it an excellent place for businesses.
44 // ASPIRE ON THE SHORE
A GREAT INVESTMENT “One of the many reasons international companies choose Ras Al Khaimah is because it has a strong, resilient, and diversified economy, and a long-term growth environment offering attractive returns,” says Phillips. For global investors looking for a beachfront property in the UAE, RAK is a great alternative to the pricier markets of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Jackie Johns, Managing Partner of Christie’s International Real Estate Dubai, sees RAK as a solid future investment opportunity. “International hotel brands setting up shop in Ras Al Khaimah have seen a sharp increase in tourism, and this is being matched by luxury residences that are already reaping rewards for their owners,” she says. SUPERIOR LIFESTYLE While Ras Al Khaimah is primarily an investment market, it’s also becoming a great place to live. Compared with Dubai and Abu Dhabi, RAK still has space and supply. The Hajar Mountains provide a rugged backdrop for relaxed living, and new villa developments are coming to island locations. Prices are considerably more attractive in Ras Al Khaimah, too. “Our exclusive inventory in RAK includes MASA Residence, 396 ultra-luxury residences with branded interiors and uninterrupted sea views on Al Marjan Island,” says Johns. Prices per square foot start at around AED 1,900 ($517). “Trying to obtain the same level of branded interiors, sea views, and island luxury is impossible in the pricier Dubai market.” Outdoorsy types can head to Jebel Jais, the UAE’s highest mountain, to hike the trails; sip coffee on the deck at 1484 by Puro, the country’s highest restaurant; or scream their way down the Jais Flight, the world’s longest zipline. Over in the desert, the Al Wadi Nature Reserve offers camel trekking, horseback riding, and falconry, along with Arabian-inspired spa treatments at the Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert resort; dinners among the dunes at Sonara Camp; and hot-air balloon experiences with ActionFlight.
Ras Al Khaimah also holds its history and heritage close. The emirate is home to the region’s first pearl farm, established by Abdulla Al Suwaidi. The pearl farm was built on Al Suwaidi’s desire to ensure this part of RAK’s heritage wasn’t lost, but it also plays a contemporary role. Of the 32,000 pearls grown here each year, only 60% are of a quality suitable for jewelry. However, “the lower- grade pearls hold immense value in the fields of medicine, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. This aligns with our vision that every pearl harvested serves a purpose,” Al Suwaidi says.
It’s a suitably forward-thinking approach born out of an emirate that may be perceived as secondary to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, but that is carving out its own niche. While Ras Al Khaimah may be an off-the-radar destination for now, it’s unlikely to remain so for much longer.

The POWER of ONE
Grassroots nonprofits, which often begin as solo endeavors, can grow to impact thousands
WORDS BY WENDY GALE
52 // ASPIRE ON THE SHORE
W e all know the importance of giving the nonprofit sector. But for some, the passion for helping others can spark a commitment that becomes a movement, leading to the establishment of an entirely new nonprofit organization. Getting a nonprofit off the ground can seem daunting, but with a little bootstrapping, ingenuity, and help from family and friends, one person can wind up impacting thousands in need. Here, we highlight three individuals who helped create local nonprofits, and the valuable lessons they learned along the way. back—whether through donating money, volunteering or actually working in
It TAKES a VILLAGE Airola and Roemer will be the first to tell you that no one builds a successful nonprofit alone. Surrounding yourself with people who share your passion and possess different skills and expertise are essential to helping an organization thrive. For example, when Airola started The Grace Network, she and her husband quickly enlisted the help of close friends. One was a doctor, another a lawyer, and another an accountant. They assisted with everything from obtaining nonprofit status to setting up QuickBooks.
WHERE to BEGIN?
For many “startup philanthropists,” inspiration comes from witnessing an unmet need. Sarah Airola was a volunteer tutor at Chicago’s Erie Elementary Charter School when she learned the teachers were spending their own money to buy hygiene supplies for students. She dug deeper and found out that almost 15% of all Chicago Public School students experience homelessness at some point during their education. So, Airola took action, founding The Grace Network , a nonprofit that brings basic hygienic supplies into schools. For others, the motivation to start a non-profit may come from a more personal experience. When Fronzie Roemer’s son, Patrick, tragically passed away after a lifelong battle with mental illness, the local community created a GoFundMe page in his memory. Roemer was surprised when it raised $110,000 in just 72 hours, and she and her family decided to use the donations to establish Paws for Patrick , honoring Patrick’s love for dogs. The nonprofit’s mission is to improve the mental health of young people through the support of animals.
Similarly, the founders of North Shore Exchange (NSE), a luxury resale shop that donates all profits to Chicagoland charities, actively sought volunteers who brought different experiences and talents to the table. “We recruited volunteers with backgrounds in marketing, business, retail, nonprofit, legal, website development, photography, and more,” recalls Kim Cornell, former President of Family Service of Glencoe, who helped start NSE. The infrastructure she and her co-founders created helped NSE grow to four retail locations plus an e-commerce business, which together have raised millions of dollars since 2013.

GETTING the WORD OUT All charitable organizations need marketing. It’s how they raise awareness and, most importantly, money. But home-grown nonprofits usually don’t have the budget for advertising, events and other paid promotion – at least not in the beginning. So, directors have to get creative. Paws for Patrick leveraged social media and public relations to spread their message. And the organization, which was founded at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, found a very receptive audience in the media, which was highly attuned to mental health struggles at the time. Word-of-mouth marketing played a huge role in the growth of The Grace Network. Social workers throughout Chicago Public Schools heard about the supply bins and knew their students would benefit as well. Demand spread organically, leading to an expansion of the organization’s reach across the city.
“Building a community of dedicated, passionate volunteers has been the key.” — KIM CORNELL, NORTH SHORE EXCHANGE
EVOLVING and STAYING RELEVANT But hygiene supplies were just the beginning for The Grace Network. After a social worker mentioned the lack of laundry facilities, the nonprofit asked a local appliance store to donate five washer-dryers. Today, there are 26 washer-dryers in schools. North Shore Exchange is a charity, but it’s also a business, and the organization’s leadership wisely understands that to keep raising money and grow, it has to offer inventory that appeals to its upscale clientele. So, NSE works with stylists to focus on what’s in fashion. The shops also expanded into home goods, art, lighting and tableware.
The POWER of PURPOSE
The Grace Network started in two schools; three years later, they serve more than 125. Paws for Patrick has expanded into all 50 states and reached 960 individuals with their therapy dog program in January 2025 alone. NSE has donated more than $4.2 million to Chicago area charities, addressing the critical needs of abuse, hunger, homelessness, mental health and more. Airola, Roemer, and Cornell all emphasize that their nonprofits would not have been possible without the tireless support of friends, family, and volunteers. As Cornell said, “Building a community of dedicated, passionate volunteers has been the key to NSE’s success.” While starting a nonprofit is challenging, the impact is immeasurable—and it all starts with someone taking the first step.

SUPPORTING YOUR CHILD’S
A guide for parents raising innovators Entrepreneurial JOURNEY
WORDS BY WENDY GALE
60 // ASPIRE ON THE SHORE
F rom adolescent inventors to teenage tech founders to the neighborhood kid with a power washer, it seems like young entrepreneurs are popping up everywhere these days. In fact, according to research from Junior Achievement USA and Ernst & Young LLP, 41% of teens say they’d like to start their own business instead of working in a traditional job. Other surveys have found that as many as 75% of young people are interested in entrepreneurship. If you have a budding business owner in your home, you may find yourself both in awe of their ambition - and uncertain of how best to support them. Here are some tips from teachers, mentors and kids themselves about how parents can be their children’s greatest ally as they transform the family room into the board room. IT STARTS with an IDEA Kids are natural creative thinkers, dreaming up inventive solutions for the world around them. Sarah Sleevi leads the all-girls Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) at Female Strong. She emphasizes the importance of “the ideation phase,” where students identify pain points in their lives and try to come up with solutions. “It doesn’t matter how small—it just needs to be an issue that people face,” Sleevi explained.
Bob Bollweg, who teaches the entrepreneurship class “Startup U” at New Trier High School, has a similar process. His students create a “Bug Me List,” a collection of everyday annoyances, and then choose one issue and brainstorm solutions. Our children are more adept at identifying problems and solutions than we often give them credit for. As parents, we tend to problem-solve for them, but it’s important to allow young entrepreneurs to take responsibility. Parents can help by prompting kids and keeping the conversation going, but let their idea be their idea.
MENTORSHIP is PARTNERSHIP
Once your child has a solid idea, the next step is mentorship. In Bollweg’s class, each group of student-entrepreneurs is paired with a volunteer mentor from outside of New Trier. Clara Crossgrove, a senior in Bollweg’s class, worked with fellow students Kelsea Banh, Ricki Viner, and Leila Heitner to develop a healthy edible bark called Positive Snacks. “Our mentor gave us really helpful tips on presentation, branding, and even pricing,” Crossgrove said.
