Now in its third and fourth generation, Chalet is currently run by Larry Thalmann III, who has played an instrumental role in modernizing the business with the help of his children, Lawson and Carleigh. As Chief Technology Officer, Lawson opened Chalet’s e-commerce store, making it easier to shop for plants, home décor, and gardening essentials. The company has also embraced community engagement and sustainability, with Carleigh leading hundreds of events and their team recently launching a sustainability committee to align with today’s environmentally conscious consumers.

FOSTERING COLLABORATION

Working with family not only requires shared goals, but a willingness to embrace new perspectives. Whether it’s a new business line or a digital marketing trend to reach a different audience, “you have to be open to new ideas,” says Stan Razny, President of Razny Jewelers, Chicago’s top family-owned and operated jeweler for nearly 75 years. The company was founded in 1951 by Razny’s parents, who immigrated from Poland and opened the first Razny Jewelers location in Oak Park. Today Stan and his wife Ingrid run the business alongside their children, Eric, Christine and Michael, operating four locations in Highland Park, Chicago, Addison and Hinsdale. When it comes to longevity, Stan Razny emphasizes the importance of mentorship. “If you’re going to have a successful next operation, you have to prepare that generation…they move into the leadership role as we move into the guidance role.” “[Stan and Ingrid] have a lot of experience, and sometimes we have new ideas,” adds Christine Razny- Porter, who created one of Razny’s own jewelry brands, Refined by Razny. “It’s about working together to blend all those opinions to get the best final outcome.”

PLAYING to your STRENGTHS

At the end of the day, success isn’t about competition – it’s about knowing your role and working together. “People always ask who will be taking over the family business, but I don’t think of it that way,” says Carleigh Thalmann. “Everyone can add value and stay in their lane. It doesn’t need to be a competition to the top.” Terlato echoes that sentiment. “We’ve cultivated a culture of open communication and mutual respect for each other’s strengths. There’s an understanding that everyone brings something different to the mix and people’s roles need to be aligned with their strengths and capabilities.”
