Aspire On The Shore - Spring/Summer 2025

THE LEADER in LUXURY TRAIN TRAVEL

ITALY in MOTION Another highly anticipated newcomer to Europe’s luxury rail scene is La Dolce Vita Orient Express. Set to launch this spring, this train channels the glamour of 1960s Italy with sophisticated carriages and decor inspired by the masters of 20th-century Italian design. Guests can choose from one or two-night journeys through Italy’s most breathtaking landscapes, from the rolling hills of Tuscany to the shores of Sicily. Each itinerary is carefully curated to showcase beautiful views along with exclusive cultural, historical, and gastronomic experiences.

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is one of seven luxury trains operated by Belmond, a global hospitality brand known for its hotels, trains, river cruises and safaris. “Belmond is certainly the leader in luxury train travel. Nobody builds and operates trains like they do,” says Monica Varri, President and Owner of Lake Forest Travel Bureau. The brand is known for pairing travel with unique experiences. One such trip is a four-day ride aboard the Royal Scotsman, which includes a tour of the Scottish Highlands in partnership with The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, a leading global whisky club. Highlights include a private tour of the Benromach distillery, a visit to the Rothiemurchus Estate in the Cairngorms National Park, and a one-year membership in the Society. In July, another exciting journey awaits in the United Kingdom when Belmond debuts the Britannic Explorer, the first-ever sleeper train in England and Wales. Departing from London, this luxurious train invites travelers to explore the UK’s beautiful countryside and historic cities. Onboard, passengers can unwind in the wellness spa, mingle in the Observation car, and enjoy a world-class meal prepared by Michelin-starred chef Simon Rogan. Guests also have their choice of off-board guided excursions, ranging from boat tours and wild swimming to a countryside experience at a traditional British pub.

ELEGANCE meets EXCLUSIVITY A sense of exclusivity adds to the allure of luxury train travel. With trains like the Britannic Explorer and Royal Scotsman accommodating just 36 guests, availability is limited – and that’s reflected in the price. Trips generally start at around $5,000 per person for shorter itineraries but can exceed $50,000 for the most coveted accommodations. Given the growing demand, planning ahead is essential. “We generally advise planning 6-12 months ahead, especially for iconic routes with limited departures,” says Bitting. Thornton agrees, noting that some of the best cabins sell out more than a year in advance. For those dreaming of an era where travel was as much about the journey as the destination, luxury trains offer an unforgettable experience.
