THE CENTER OF IT ALL

One of the best parts of entertaining is bringing out timeless pieces that aren't frequently used. The beauty of heirloom silver, crystal goblets and serving pieces goes beyond the traditional, and they can (and should) be incorporated with contemporary pieces and other metals. Waterford, Christofle, and Villeroy & Boch are trusted brands for these treasured pieces. And don’t forget, silverware can be polished, and crystal shined well ahead of time, leaving one less thing to do as the main event approaches. SILVERWARE AND CRYSTAL

Once the table has been set, the centerpiece and candles take center stage. Arrangements can range from dramatic to understated, but keep in mind, you shouldn’t create displays that are so tall that your guests can’t see those across the table. Your local florist can help you select the perfect bouquet, or sign up for an arrangement subscription with H.Bloom to keep your home filled with fresh flowers year-round. For an exquisite finishing touch to any table, Michael Aram offers a unique selection of candle holders and serving ware.

a winter REPRIEVE A s pretty as a snow globe, the first snowflakes of the season can be a welcome sight. And while midwestern winters inevitably start to feel long, a getaway is the perfect way to break up the monotony of the season. So, if you’re looking for an elevated escape this winter, we tapped travel expert Kendra Thornton of Royal Travel & Tours for some suggestions. Thornton is president of the luxury travel agency, which has been a fixture on the North Shore for over 45 years. Here are a few of her recommendations:

BIG SUR, CALIFORNIA

POST RANCH INN

Situated along the iconic Highway One on the cliffs of Big Sur, the Post Ranch Inn offers visitors a retreat unlike any other. According to Thornton, the Inn’s many yoga classes and guided meditations provide a great way to reenergize the mind, body, and spirit. She added that, in addition to breathtaking views, the resort is known for its luxury spa treatments and award-winning dining at Sierra Mar, which also serves up spectacular ocean sunsets. The Inn features a unique selection of suites and houses – even a freestanding luxury tree house perched over the surrounding forest.

LITTLE TORCH KEY, FLORIDA

If you're in search of higher temperatures, Little Palm Island Resort & Spa provides the perfect dose of winter warmth. Thornton noted that the resort is located in the Florida Keys, practically guaranteeing beautiful weather any time of year. Luxury bungalows, pristine white sand beaches, and snorkeling in the turquoise waters of the Atlantic are just some of the benefits of this remote paradise. LITTLE PALM ISLAND RESORT & SPA

AUCTION HOUSE

Christie’s International Real Estate was born out of the venerable Christie’s auction house, which has captivated a global audience of luxury collectors and aficionados since 1766. Transcending traditional luxury marketing venues, Christie’s International Real Estate showcases listings at auction sales, as well as exclusive events around the world, creating a unique synergy between high-end real estate, art, and luxury goods.

M

ore than two years removed from the upheaval of the pandemic, the luxury real estate market is at an inflection point. After a record- setting performance in 2021 and a strong – in many cases record-setting – first half of 2022, sales activity is gradually returning to what many would consider normal levels. Within this setting, three notable trends we’ve been tracking at @properties Christie’s International Real Estate were gaining momentum at mid-year and are shaping the luxury market narrative even further this fall. HARD ASSETS AS A SAFE HAVEN Amid high inflation, rising interest rates, and increased volatility in equity markets, consumers are increasingly looking to hard assets, notably real estate, to stabilize their wealth portfolios. Residential real estate is often a relatively strong performer in an inflationary environment, and sales in the first half of the year provided further evidence that real property can be a valuable hedge. BLUE-CHIP MARKET HEATS UP Even the most secure consumers tend to pause big-ticket purchases like luxury homes during uncertain economic times. However, a combination of factors are making a widespread pullback in the luxury real estate market highly unlikely. Rather, wealthy buyers are putting a premium on blue- chip markets and properties, banking on predictable, long-term growth opportunities. This has played out in Chicagoland throughout 2022 with sales of super- luxury homes in the $4 million-and-up category on pace to eclipse 2021’s record 101 sales. And according to Crain’s Chicago Business , more homes in the area have sold above $10 million this year than in any other year besides 2018. THE HUNT FOR RELATIVE VALUE

Of course, blue-chip properties are priced accordingly, and those figures have skyrocketed in the past two years. That has driven buyers to look for alternatives in other locations – a trend that will continue with interest rates impacting housing affordability – even in the luxury market. In cities, suburbs, and second-home markets, buyers have shown a willingness to go farther, take on a remodeling project, or otherwise seek conditions (such as low-tax/no tax states) in search of value. For more on these trends and how they’re impacting the luxury market not only in the Midwest but nationally and internationally, check out the Christie’s International Real Estate Luxury Trends Report.

S

imilar to the trends playing out in luxury real estate, Christie’s Auction House enjoyed many record-breaking sales during the first half of 2022. Total auction house sales were up 18 percent vs. the first half of 2021 to $4.1 billion, and Christie’s accounted for seven of the twelve most expensive works sold during this time.

EXCEPTIONAL SALES Commanding the largest sales price was Andy Warhol’s Shot Sage Blue Marilyn , which sold May 9 in New York City for $195 million. The recognizable piece is now the most valuable 20th-century artwork and second most expensive work ever sold at auction. ENTHUSIASM FOR LUXURY G OODS Global luxury goods were in high demand with $413.3 million sold, an 18 percent increase from last year. A perennial favorite, timepieces continue to capture the interest of high-end collectors. The Kairos Collection of 128 Patek Philippe watches was 100 percent sold in Geneva, Hong Kong, and New York – resulting in total sales of 183 percent above the low estimate. Even fine wine coaxed out record-breaking paddle raises with sales in the first half ringing up $57.8 million, a 234 percent increase over the year-earlier period. This included the historic $19.6 million sale of “The Visionary’s Spectacular Cellar” – which ranks as the highest-ever total for the category and most valuable single-owner collection at Christie’s. A HISTORIC PIPELINE The remainder of 2022 promises continued strong sales with the historic auction from the estate of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. Estimated at over $1 billion, Visionary: The Paul G. Allen Collection will be the largest and most exceptional art auction in history. Proceeds will benefit various charities. Additionally, the Ann & Gordon Getty Collection recently achieved more than $150 million across 10 auctions in October. This collection featured impressionist works by Claude Monet and Edgar Degas, and proceeds will benefit the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation for the Arts. @properties Christie’s International Real Estate is closely aligned with Christie’s and offers a dedicated auction house liaison to provide real estate clients special access to auction, private-sale, and appraisal services for art and luxury goods.
