Aspire On The Shore - Fall/Winter 2026

O

n a Tuesday evening at Towne & Oak in Winnetka, women of all ages gather around tables with snacks and wine. Some come with friends. Others arrive on their own, sitting down with people they've never met. They aren’t here for dinner. They’re here to play mahjong. Across the North Shore, scenes like this are becoming a familiar sight. Once considered an old-fashioned tradition, American mahjong is stepping into the spotlight, popping up everywhere from homes and country clubs to restaurants, shops and resorts. "It's the perfect social game," says Kenilworth resident and mahjong instructor Cissy Crawford, who’s seen interest soar over the past few years. "It's a way to get together with your friends, and with our Chicago weather, you can do it year-round."
