Crawford discovered mahjong 20 years ago while spending time in Colorado. She began teaching the game in 2021, and her business has grown almost entirely through word of mouth. Today, her calendar is filled with lessons at homes and clubs all over the North Shore, with her students spanning generations.
As mahjong’s popularity has grown, so has everything around it.
Part of the appeal is the game itself.
Mahjong rewards strategy and quick thinking, although luck plays a role too. Unlike some games, it can be learned in just a handful of lessons, making it approachable for beginners while offering enough depth to keep experienced players coming back.
But more than anything, it's become a way to unplug and spend a few uninterrupted hours with friends — old and new.
"Most of our guests come with a friend, a sister or a group," says Holy Mahj co-founder Anne Ruder. "The weekend gives them a chance to reconnect, slow down and enjoy quality time in a beautiful setting." As mahjong's popularity has grown, so has everything around it. Local boutiques including Maze Home, Peachtree Place and Material Possessions now carry merchandise like tiles, racks, custom mats and other accessories. Meanwhile, beautifully styled mahjong tables have become a staple in many North Shore homes, some with dedicated spaces for the game. It’s safe to say that mahjong has found its place alongside book clubs and racquet sports as another way to bring people together on the North Shore. And if you ask Crawford, it’s here to stay. “This is an educated community that values staying both physically and mentally active. Mahjong fits that bill.”
"People are searching for ways to get off their phones and be more present," says Adey Hannis, an instructor with Holy Mahj on the North Shore. "It's common ground for best friends and strangers alike to come together and share a mahjong experience." Founded in 2023 in Charleston, South Carolina, Holy Mahj is among a new generation of businesses shaping mahjong’s modern revival. What began with lessons has expanded to include league play, social events and retreats. One of Holy Mahj’s newest offerings is Mahj Point, created in partnership with travel and event planning company Palm & Proper. The three-day getaways are held at luxury resorts across the Southeast, pairing games of mahjong and tennis with downtime to experience the destination. Their upcoming Kiawah Island retreat sold out in less than 24 hours.
